Top horseman heading interstate

VICTORIAN reinsman John Caldow will make a rare trip to South Australia this weekend.

Once a frequent cross-border traveller, Caldow hasn’t driven at SA’s home of harness racing – Globe Derby – for more than a decade.

To be precise, Caldow’s previous SA adventure was August 2015 when he drove a double behind Amajorjo and Ennaellie.

“I couldn’t tell you the last time I had a drive over there,” Caldow said. “It’s been a while, I know that!

“There was a time I’d head to Adelaide every now and then, but it hasn’t been the case for so long.

“I have had some great results during previous visits, so I’m looking forward to getting back and hopefully have a good night.”

Originally heading interstate to partner a trio trained by Brent Lilley, Caldow has ‘picked up’ a couple of local drives, including Resurrects, which will be his first outing on the card.

A last start winner for trainer Lance Holberton, Resurrects has drawn to make his presence felt from barrier two.

Caldow will then join forces with Lilley when Kennys Son attempts to register an overdue victory from his 10-metre handicap.

Among the placegetters at four of his last five starts – while finishing fourth in the other – Kennys Son hasn’t scored since Kilmore on May 21.

“Kenny has been racing along very consistently,” Caldow said. “This looks like a suitable race for him, so he’ll definitely be thereabouts.”

An hour later, the Caldow and Lilley combination will be in action with short-priced favourite Brother Mountain.

Drawn barrier five, the son of Aldebaran Eagle slots into four with the removal of the emergency.

“Brother would be the main chance of the three,” Caldow said. “He’s going really well.

“He wasn’t beaten by much at Menangle a couple of runs ago and I won with him in Kilmore after that.

“He’s gotten stronger as his preparation has gone along and will take some beating.”

The next of Caldow’s catch drives follows, with the visitor to take the reins behind the Reece Moore-trained Classic Line.

“Reece trained from my place many years ago, so it will be good to catch up with him,” Caldow said. “Hopefully enjoy a win together.”

Queen Kizen rounds out the evening, with the daughter of What The Hill a $1.40 favourite from gate four.

“Kizen is a nice honest enough filly,” Caldow said. “She won’t be far off them.”
