Tough first-up race for Lace

PROMISING mare Our Cowgirls N Lace will need to be as rugged as burlap if she is going to complete a first-up victory at Club Menangle on Saturday night.

Successful during her first two Australian starts, Our Cowgirls N Lace was third at her following outing before trainer Brad Hewitt elected to freshen-up the daughter of Bettors Delight.

Impressed with Our Cowgirls N Lace’s progress, Hewitt has set his sights on a host of features throughout summer, beginning with the Ladyship Stake.

“She has come along well,” Hewitt said. “I’m pleased with what she has done so far.

“I gave her a break after her last race with the view of having her in the right condition for some of the better races in the next few months in mind.

“There is a heck of good races for her and this is as good a place as any to kick her off again.”

With Hewitt to take the reins, Our Cowgirls N Lace has drawn to settle in a prominent position from barrier two.

Despite the four-year-old’s favourable starting point Hewitt is aware of the arduous task ahead.

“This is a step up for her,” Hewitt said. “She has only had 10 starts for four wins and is up against some well-performed mares which have won up to a dozen races.

“The Stunning Nun for example has won 13 races and broken 1:50…she’s the one to beat.

“We’ve drawn well and if she can get a bit of cover she’ll be there late.”
