Waiting for the penny to drop

DESPITE his victory in Maryborough yesterday, Alta Cassino is far from a complete racehorse.

That’s the call from trainer Joe Pace who stated the three-year-old “has a lot to learn”.

When Alta Cassino does mature, however, Pace expects the son of Mach Three to develop into “a pretty reasonable type”.

“He did well to win yesterday, but I felt he should’ve won by now,” Pace said.

“He’s only had eight starts and still has a lot to learn, but what he shows on the training track is not necessarily what he’s taking to the race track.

“Once the penny drops I expect him to be a pretty reasonable type.”

With Pace holding the reins, Alta Cassino was positioned in the perfect one-one trail from barrier five as Outlook led from three.

Angled three-wide around the final bend, Alta Cassino reached the front in the last stride to score by a head from Outlook.

Caruso Star was two-and-a-half metres away third in 2:01.2.

“With the trip he got I would have been pretty disappointed if he didn’t run on like he did,” Pace said.

“The leader kept finding up the straight and it took us the whole way to get there, but he got there, which is what counts.”
