Working mums cause Group One upset

A PAIR of working mums caused an upset to register their initial Group One wins at Club Menangle last night.

Less than a month after giving birth to a daughter Stella, KerrynAnn Morris trained and drove Eye Can Run to capture the TAB Regional Metropolitan Championship.

It was Morris’ maiden top shelf victory as a driver.

Hampered by niggling leg issues in 2019, Eye Can Run had an embryo transferred to a surrogate broodmare and is the dam of a colt by Sweet Lou.

Eye Can Run also has foal by Captaintreacherous due later in the season after being sidelined again last year.

“It was a wonderful night,” Morris said. “I’ve trained a couple of Group One winners, but driving one as well just adds that little extra specialness to it.

“Eye Can Run also has one foal on the ground and another due this season, so us mums are doing alright.”

Beginning well from the pole, Eye Can Run was unable to hold out Ilikemebettor and Muscle Factory which crossed to the pegs.

Travelling comfortably two-back along the inside the daughter of Heston Blue Chip was brilliantly weaved through an opening at the top of the home straight before sprinting to a two-and-a-half metre win from Send It.

Ilikemebettor rallied to be two metres away third.

Breaking an eight-month drought from the winners circle, the four-year-old rated 1:54.9 over 2300 metres at $34 on the Tote.

“She is such a consistent mare which was always capable of winning a nice race with the right run, which is what she got” Morris said. “The win wasn’t totally expected, but not a surprise either.”

Thanks to her triumph Eye Can Run will return to Menangle next week in search of more Group One glory in the TAB Regional Championship Super Final.

“She’s in the Super Final now and we’ll just hope for the right draw and run in that as well,” Morris said.

“After that I don’t have anything specific in mind for her and will have to look at the programming.”
