HAVING dominated the Western Australia Derby in recent years it is strange to see Gary Hall without a runner in tonight’s $200,000 edition at Gloucester Park.

With his name etched on to almost every honour roll in his home state, Hall has won five of the past seven editions of the Blue Riband, including the last two.

Amazingly Hall hadn’t won the classic until scoring with the ill-fated Alta Christiano in 2013.

The multiple premiership winning trainer was then triumphant with Beaudiene Boaz in 2015, Chicago Bull in ’16, King Of Swing in ’18 and Major Trojan last season.

Given he will be an observer this time around Hall has given us his thoughts on the field.

    1. Howard Hughes – Had to draw one to have his best chance of winning. Good enough and should lead from there.
    2. Gardys Legacy – Outclassed in this field
    3. Harley Zest – Can’t see him beating this lot
    4. Aristocratic Star – 2500 metres is too far for him…would have to get a really good run
    5. Franco Ecuador – Got ability and could be an each way chance but needs to have luck
    6. Double Expresso – Really good filly but they don’t have good record in the Derby
    7. Star Fromthepalace – Goes ok, but don’t think it can win
    8. Hampton Banner – Very quick beginner and could throw a cat among the pigeons early but don’t think can win
    9. Mach Da Vinci – Don’t think he can from barrier nine. Had he drawn closer maybe
    10. Patrons Star – Bit of an unknown and maybe a chance
    11. Major Martini – Best horse in the race for me and will be hard to beat
    12. Al Guerrero – Can’t win from there

HALL’S DERBY SELECTIONS: Major Martini 1, Howard Hughes 2, Patrons Star 3.
