Chasing slice of history in time honoured event

QUALITY pacer Emain Macha will chase a slice of history at Globe Derby on Saturday night.

Engaged in the Italian Cup, the Greg Scholefield-trained gelding is aiming for a hat-trick in the feature.

Emain Macha captured the 2019 edition in 1:59.2 over 2230 metres before returning to successfully defend his title the following year in 1:59.9.

From the records available no competitor has managed three wins in the time-honoured event.

“I wasn’t aware of that,” Scholefield said. “It’d be nice if he can pull that off.

“It won’t be easy but we’ll be trying our best.”

Returning from a luckless Victorian campaign, Emain Macha will begin from the outside of the front row.

Darren Billinger, who is unbeaten from three drives behind the son of Safari, will once again hold the reins.

Considered Emain Macha’s main danger, Joes A Character has drawn barrier six.

“He went well in Ballarat at his first start over there but wasn’t up to his best at his second run,” Scholefield said.

“He’s come through the trip well enough and is bright within himself now that he is home.

“Joes A Character has to be the one to beat as he’s a pretty nice type.”
