Drought from the winners’ circle broken

HANDY mare Penny Bobbins broke a drought from the winners’ circle with her success at Tabcorp Park Melton last night.

Scoring for trainer Scott Ewen, Penny Bobbins’ victory was her first since last September.

During the interim the daughter of Changeover has been runner-up five times.

“She rarely, if ever, runs a bad race,” Ewen said. “She’s had about 20 starts since her last win and been among the placings close to half of those and no further back than fifth in most of her runs.

“A few of those she’s run second and just needed the right conditions to get that win on the board, which is what she got last night.”

With Ewen in the cart Penny Bobbins was settled in the one-one from her inside of the second row draw as Blue Chipped led and Deft Touch worked on her outside.

Shuffled back as Bellissima was taken to the ‘death seat’, Penny Bobbins was forced to the extreme outside around the home turn before sprinting to a three-metre win from Deft Touch, with Blue Chipped three metres away third.

“On paper she looked like she had them covered and thankfully that’s the way it panned out,” Ewen said.

“I was pretty pleased with the way she came home once I straightened her up.”

Rating 2:00.3 over 2240 metres, Penny Bobbins stretched her record to five wins and 12 placings from 38 starts

With no major plans in mind for the five-year-old Ewen will “find whatever suits and go from there.”
