Former champ out to regain title

WITH the venue proving to be a happy hunting ground in the past, Pete McMullen is looking forward to returning to Globe Derby on Saturday night.

McMullen will make the long journey to South Australia as one of two Queensland representatives in the Australian Drivers’ Championship.

McMullen’s sister, Narissa, is the other “Banana bender” making the trip.

In what will be his fourth SA appearance as part of the series, McMullen hopes to regain the title he captured during his inaugural visit in 2014.

“I’ve had a bit of luck in Adelaide and hopefully that will be the case again on the weekend,” McMullen said.

“A lot of the series can come down to luck in the draw as to what horses you drive, so I’m looking forward to seeing the fields later today.

“It’ll be nice if a few go my way and I have a decent shot at winning a race or two.”

The McMullens will clash with a pair of drivers from each state including defending champion – West Australian superstar Gary Hall junior.

Another former champion, local hero Wayne Hill, is also among the combatants.

Each competitor is scheduled to contest eight races, with the winner to be decided on points accumulated throughout the night.

Along with bragging rights as Australian champion, the winner will be given strong consideration when determining who will represent Australia in next year’s World Driving Championship in Italy.

Citing Hall as the one to beat, McMullen believes Hill and his team mate, Ryan Hryhorec, possess a slight advantage.

“I admire Gary and think no matter what he drives he will get the best out of them,” McMullen said. “Plus he is used to driving on a smaller track.

“The South Australians have an edge in knowing the form and track, which makes them the ones to beat.”
