Freshman signals Protostar intentions

PLANS remain uncertain with promising youngster Baystyle despite his success at Globe Derby just moments ago.

Successful in a series heat in Mount Gambier on April 7, Baystyle completed a clean sweep by capturing the Kindergarten Stake Final for former South Australian trainer Geoff Webster.

Based in Victoria, Webster sent the son of Art Major across the border for his past two outings specifically for the series.

“It looked like an ideal race for him, with the heat and Final, and it certainly worked out that way,” Webster said. “He got the perfect result in Mount Gambier and was too good again tonight.

“I don’t have anything particular in mind for him after tonight, but it would be nice to win the races that will get him some attention for a start in The Protostar.”

A $500,000 Queensland-based slot race, The Protostar is scheduled to be conducted at Albion Park on July 11.

As for his latest triumph, Baystyle was caught wide early from his second row draw before gaining the run of the race in the one-one as South Aussie Star led and Spirit Of Kezza worked in the ‘death seat’.

Angled three-wide leaving the back straight, Baystyle sprinted to a five-and-a-half metre win from a brave Spirit Of Kezza.

South Aussie Star battled on to be three metres away third.

Bred and owned by South Australian interests, the son of Art Major rated 2:00.5 over 1800 metres to take his record to three wins and a second from four starts for earnings of $20,297.

“I was pretty confident with him as he’d shown a bit in his first few starts,” Webster said. “His work since the heat had improved and I knew it would take a big run to beat him.”
