Hill’s haul

PREMIER reinsman Wayne Hill enjoyed a grand time at the ‘office’ last night.

With a strong book of drives, Hill ended the Globe Derby meeting with a quintet.

It is the ninth time Hill has driven five or more winners on a card, with his first coming at the same venue on March 20, 2006. Hill’s previous ‘bag full’ was in Port Pirie last June.

Hill’s nine ‘multis’ include registering six wins at three meetings.

Only Hill’s sister, Dani, has driven five or more winners more times, with the inspirational reinswoman boasting a South Australian record 10 quintets and five sextets.

Legendary horseman Kevin Brook was the first to notch a quintet in South Australia, which he achieved in Port Pirie on January 16, 1958.

The first recorded quintet in Australia was by William Trainor at the Melbourne Racecourse – now Flemington – on March 12, 1862.

“I had a good book of drivers and was pretty confident of having a good night,” Hill said. “You always hope it can turn out how it looks on paper, but that’s rarely the case in racing.

“At any meeting you’re rapt to get a winner, let alone two or three, so five is fantastic.”

Hill opened the card by scoring with the Reece Moore-trained Neds Beach before partnering a trio for Victorian horsewoman Emma Stewart.

Another Victorian, Brent Lilley, provided Hill with the fourth leg after Spirit Of Anarchy outclassed his rivals in 1:58.6 over 1800 metres.
