In prime condition for Cup

QUALITY pacer Emain Macha should have little trouble during his title defence at Globe Derby tonight despite an awkward draw.

Set to begin from barrier seven – the outside of the front row – Emain Macha is a short-priced favourite in the Italian Cup over 2230 metres.

TAB Fixed Odds has the Greg Scholefield-trained gelding at $1.25 to retain the throne he captured last season.

Successful at three of his last for starts – including his two recent outings at the same venue – Emain Macha is in “prime condition” according to Scholefield.

“He couldn’t be feeling any better,” Scholefield said. “He is in prime condition.

“I was thrilled with his run last week and he hasn’t set a hoof wrong since.

“The draw isn’t the best, but he is going to be very to beat.”

Citing Joes A Character as the main danger, Scholefield believes Lochinvar Hugo can also play a role in the finish.

In sensational form this season, Joes A Character boasts six wins and two seconds from eight starts for the term.

The only other runner under double figures at $3.40, the son of Roll With Joe has drawn ideally in the pole.

Although first-up since last September, ultra-consistent performer Lochinvar Hugo “can’t be under estimated” from barrier two.

“This is Joes A Character’s first test against this grade but he seems like a very nice horse,” Scholefield said. “He’s also got the draw to make him hard to beat, especially if he leads and is left alone in front.

“Lochinvar Hugo is likely to get a nice trip from there, and although his fitness may come into play, he can’t be under estimated.”
