Hoping to break 18-year drought
SOUTH Australian-bred horsewoman Kylie Sugars is poised to make a rare appearance at her former home track this weekend.
With regular driver David Smith sidelined through injury, Sugars is taking the opportunity to partner in-form trotter Euryphaessa, which she bred and part-owns, on Saturday night.
In what will be a hit-and-run mission for the Victorian-based former ‘Croweater’, Sugars will have her first drive at Globe Derby for more than a decade.
To be precise, Sugars last competed at the venue on June 2, 2012 when unplaced with Rodger Vance in the opening event on the card.
“With David unable to drive because of injury, I thought I’d take the opportunity to head over to drive her,” Sugars said.
“I don’t remember the last time I drove at Globe Derby, but I know it’s been a while.
“I’ll catch up with friends and family over a quick lunch and then at the race that night and say hello to my mare as well.”
A last start winner, Euryphaessa is favoured to provide Sugars with a drought-breaking victory at the track from barrier four.
Sugars’ previous ‘hometown’ success was on May 24, 2004 when triumphant with Lite Monet.
“She is in good form, and if she can show the gate speed she has shown before, she will be in with a good show,” Sugars said.
“Ingrid and David have done a tremendous job with her, with three wins and two placings from five starts…hopefully I can help add to that on the weekend.”
