Inter rank outsider epitomises grassroots harness racing
HE’S training the rank outsider of the series, but that doesn’t faze Trent Lethaby.
In fact, the Queensland horseman’s Inter Dominion campaign epitomises the grassroots element of harness racing.
Making the trip south to take on the large stables, Lethaby is contesting the prestigious Championship with moderately-performed trotter Red Castleton.
Ninth as a $126 shot during his opening heat at Club Menangle last weekend, Red Castleton is listed at $201 ahead of the second round in Bathurst tomorrow night.
Those odds are skinny compared to his quote to win the Group One Final in Menangle on December 11.

If family history counts for anything, Red Castleton would be among the favourites, with the gelding hailing from the same clan as Inter Dominion champions Castleton’s Pride and Sir Castleton.
For Lethaby, having his first Inter Dominion runner is already a win!
“I’ve never been part of the Inter before and I’m just enjoying the experience and ride,” Lethaby said.
“I’m staying at Robbie Morris’ place and just having a general good time.
“I don’t know if he can finish in the money at any point, but he will do his best and we’ll enjoy our time here.”
Red Castleton’s chances of figuring “in the money” were given a major boost after drawing barrier two over 1730 metres.
“He’s got a lot of gate speed, so if can get along to the fence and trail he won’t be too far away,
Lethaby said. “This is a huge step up for him but he will do well.”
