PROMISING type Jimmy The Irishman has maintained his perfect Australian record.

Having his fifth start since crossing the Tasman, Jimmy The Irishman completed a narrow victory at Tabcorp Park Melton tonight.

Pleasantly surprised by the four-year-old’s progress, trainer Adam Kelly is hopeful Jimmy The Irishman can extend his unbeaten status in coming weeks.

“He has been a bit of a surprise packet,” Kelly said. “Some friends from Tasmania bought him out of New Zealand and he wasn’t that expensive.

“He’s certainly passed early expectations, which is terrific.

“I’ll keep poking him around Melton for the next few weeks, and when he tells me he is ready for a break, I will freshen him up.”

Driven by in-form reinsman Zac Phillips, Jimmy The Irishman began quickly to lead from the pole as Would You Mind was forced to work overtime in the ‘death seat’.

With the pair matching strides along the home straight, Jimmy The Irishman staved off the determined challenger to score by a half-neck.

La Puddie was five metres away third in 1:54 over 1720 metres.

“That’s the first time we’ve pushed him out to test his gate speed and he did well,” Kelly said. “He’s only had 11 starts for six wins and a couple of seconds, so he’s still got plenty to learn.

“Further down the track I think he will be better suited to coming off the pace.”
