King’s throne under threat

HE’S been the ‘King of Globe Derby’ since arriving in South Australia, but Van Mara’s throne is under threat.

Purchased from a claimer at Tabcorp Park Melton by Mount Gambier horseman Steven Fennell in April, Van Mara has had nine starts since changing stables for a debut second and eight wins.

The son of Lisa Mara has simply been a class above his opposition – but that appears to be set to change.

Van Mara will return to the troubled venue on Saturday where he will face three new arrivals to the state.

Former New South Wales-based trio Cullenburn, Little Rascal and Wrangler will make their SA debuts for local horseman Paul Cavallaro.

Wrangler is the quickest of the three with a 1:48.8 triumph at Club Menangle, while Cullenburn is the slowest at 1:50.8!

Cavallaro’s wife, Lisa, purchased the three as a package deal from the Belinda McCarthy stable.

“I was looking for a free-for-aller to trainer when I heard about these three being on the market,” Cavallaro said.

“The owner wanted someone who would not only race them but make sure they were looked after once retired, which is exactly what will happen.

“I’ve been very happy with their work and at the trials recently, so I expect them do to well here.”

Cullenburn has fared best in barrier three, with Little Rascal to come from five, while Wrangler is the widest drawn runner in the field of seven.

Van Mara will begin from gate six.

“Van Mara came out of a claimer, but geez he’s improved since being here,” Cavallaro said. “He’s clearly in a zone and is the one to beat.”
