Memories of one of harness racing’s great characters
WIN, lose or draw, it will be an emotional time as memories of one of harness racing’s great characters come rushing back in Bankstown tomorrow night.
In what shapes as the omen bet of the week, handy pacer Jeffcoate will compete in an event which honours his namesake – John “Redhot” Jeffcoate.
A well-known and respected horseman around Condell Park, John prepared a successful team throughout his career with the help of his brother Norm and nephew, John Brannelly.
Brannelly is a part-owner in Jeffcoate the pacer.
Although thrilled to have the son of Hes Watching in the race, trainer Tiarn Sutton admits to harbouring nerves.
“It feels like there is a lot of pressure on the little fella, but I guess he doesn’t know what his name is,” Sutton said.
“The whole family is coming down the coast to watch him so hopefully it will be a good night.
“Redhot’s family love the chance to see him race and come to the stalls to give him a pat and hug no matter where he finishes.”
Among the outsiders at $41 from barrier four, Jeffcoate is capable of causing a boilover according to Sutton.
“He went well when third two starts ago, but tied up at his last start,” Sutton said. “The chiropractor has been over him and said ‘he is fine’ and his work has been solid.
“It’s all on target for a good run and maybe an omen win.”
Elsewhere on the card Sutton will also pay tribute to the late Ned Feehely’s as she sports his pink and purple colours while she drives Gentle Giant.
Searching for an overdue win, Gentle Giant faces a tough task from barrier seven – inside of the second row – over 1740 metres.
