Most travelled pacer on the road again!

ARGUABLY Australia’s most travelled pacer, Springfield Affair will undertake another long road trip during the next few days.

With trainer Kevin Von Duve located in South Australia’s remote southeast town of Glencoe, Springfield Affair spends hours in a float each time he competes.

For example, it is a 10-hour return drive to race at Globe Derby, which Springfield Affair has undertaken during the past fortnight.

Beginning tomorrow morning, the son of Shadow Play will commence his 1300-kilometre round trip to Port Pirie for Monday’s Kadina Cup.

Originally programmed for tomorrow, the meeting was postponed due to weather conditions.

Just to highlight the extent in which Springfield Affair travels, during his last 10 starts for Von Duve the gelding has covered roughly 8100 kilometres!

“He just about spends more time in the float than he does in his paddock,” Von Duve said. “That’s one of the downsides of living so far from the action.

“To be honest though, I enjoy the drive and it makes for a day out.

“When we have to go as far as Port Pirie, we will drive half way and spend the night before finishing the rest on Monday morning.”

Fresh from his victory last weekend, Springfield Affair has drawn barrier four in the 2050-metre feature.

In a wide-open event, the eight-year-old is midfield in betting markets at $6, with Peace Of Heaven the $3 favourite from the pole.

Prepared by premier horseman Ryan Hryhorec, Peace Of Heaven has won four of his five starts this season.

“He’s feeling terrific after a couple of runs…jumping out of his skin,” Von Duve said. “He had a good spell, the longest he’s had off, and put on 15 to 20 kilos.

“His couple of runs and stepping up his track work have sharpened him up enough for him to be right in this.

“I think the draw is alright as he is fit enough to head forward and be in the firing line.”
