Multiple breaks and surgery after horrific fall
REINSMAN David Miles and Richie Caruana are on the road to recovery after sickening falls at Maryborough yesterday.
Both drivers sustained heavy blows to the head and wrist fractures in the incident, which occurred at about the 400-metre mark of the Three-Year-Old Maiden Pace.
Caruana’s filly See You There was racing outside the leader when she broke and dislodged the 48-year-old from the sulky, with her actions causing Miss Tyler – driven by Miles – to stumble.
Miles was also unseated after being struck in the back by Michael Bellman’s drive Madam Auckland.
Miles, who has more than 700 wins, was transported to the Bendigo hospital, where he remained until late in evening.
Miles sustained multiple fractures in the left wrist and will be returning to hospital for surgery.
Caruana was taken to the Ballarat hospital, where he remained overnight.
His brother-in-law Eddie Rizzo explained Caruana had sustained a broken wrist, which is to be operated on today.
The two pacers only received minor cuts.
