STRANGE as it sounds, there is a reason Tyson Linke will be glad to see his series favourite beaten.

Linke bred and owns star filly Encipher which is due to contest a Southern Cross heat at Globe Derby tomorrow night.

Fresh from her Breeders’ Crown success at Tabcorp Park Melton last weekend, Encipher is an odds-on favourite in her qualifier.

The thing is the daughter of Captaintreacherous is trained by premier Victorian horsewoman Emma Stewart, while Linke prepares a pair of the two-year-old’s rivals.

Linke will be represented by Lou Lou Quick and Coco Mia, which he also bred and owns.

Coco Mia has drawn barrier six in the same heat as Encipher, which will come from gate seven.

“I’ve run about 4 placings in a Southern Cross Final but haven’t been able to win one,” Linke said.

“Usually it’s to one trained by Emma!

“This time it’s Emma again bringing over the favourite, but the difference is I own it.

“I’d be pretty happy if she runs second to one of the two I train though.”

Linke’s personal desire is elementary…it’s a race he simple wants to win.

“As a breeder in South Australia the Southern Cross is the race you want to win,” Linke said.

“Winning the Breeders’ Crown was phenomenal, but for sentimental reasons and local pride, there is nothing better than winning the Southern Cross.

“Like I said, I’ve run about 4 placings in a Southern Cross Final and usually a once in a generation horse.

“From the moment each foal I breed is born this is the race I dream of winning.

“Winning as an owner will be terrific, but to also do it as the training will take the cake.

“Obviously Encipher is my best chance of getting a Final winner.”

Encipher is no stranger to feature success in her home state, having captured the Group One The Allwood in May.

“Having her win the only Group One we have in South Australia was beyond special,” Linke said. “Then to get another one with the Breeders’ Crown is just surreal.

“The next month is going to be busy for her as she’s got a Vicbred heat the week after the Southern Cross Final and then hopefully on to the semi and Final of that.”
