HAVING returned to winning form at the right time, Artillery is “in perfect shape” for his title defence.
That’s the call from trainer Paul Cavallaro ahead of Saturday night’s Southern Cross heats at Globe Derby.
Successful in last season’s freshman Final, Artillery’s bid to retain his throne begins in the second heat.
The son of Art Major has had three starts from a spell, for two placings and a victory at the same venue a fortnight ago.
“Thrilled” with the three-year-old’s progress, Cavallaro is adamant Artillery can capture the futurity’s Final for a second time.
“I couldn’t happier with where he is at,” Cavallaro said. “I’ve been thrilled with his effort in each of his runs and his work has been getting better all the time.
“He’s in perfect shape for the heat and will be at his absolute peak for the Final.
“Last year he was crook before the Final and I almost wasn’t going to run him, but this time he’s spot on.”
To be driven by Mark Billinger, Artillery has drawn to search for the lead from barrier four.
“We’ll have to go forward from the draw,” Cavallaro said. “Major Reason on his inside is the main threat, but if I was driving, I wouldn’t want to be steering anything other horse than Artillery.”
