Power couple’s remarkable Group One domination

POWER couple Andy and Kate Gath have continued their remarkable association with the Great Southern Star.

Tabcorp Park Melton hosted the 10^th edition of the Group One tonight with the Gaths registering their fourth success in the prestigious event – including a hat-trick!

Capturing their first ‘Star’ with Glenferrie Typhoon in 2017, the husband-and-wife team were then triumphant with Tornado Valley in 2020 and ’21.

Majestuoso rounded off the quartet with a brilliant performance just moments ago.

“We’ve had a lot of success in this race and it is so great to get another one here tonight,” Andy said. “It is such a great race and to win it four times is such a great thrill.”

With Kate holding the reins, Majestuoso began quickly to lead from barrier four as early front runner, Wobelee, was eased to take a trial.

Proving too slick along the home straight, the son of Majestic Son staved off a late charge from Wobelee to score by a head.

“I definitely wanted the last quarter to be quick so I could keep Wobelee away,” Kate said. “I knew he was the biggest threat on my back and we did enough to hold him out.”

Im Ready Jet overcame a bad start to be four-and-a-half metres away third.

Covering the last half in 56.7 seconds, Majestuoso rated race record 1:54.6 over 1720 metres.

“He did get on the bit in the second quarter when Temporale came around and I was a little worried down the back, but he was pretty good,” Kate said.

“He was a bit of a rogue as a young horse, such a handful, but Norm (Jenkin, owner) has given us time to let him develop into the horse he is today and we can’t thank Norm enough for all his support.”

Earlier in the night Majestuoso finished fourth in his Great Southern Star heat as Temporale outmuscled his rivals in 1:54.6.

Defending champion Tornado Valley was runner-up in his heat as rising star trotter Rules Dont Apply scored in 1:57.4.
