REIGNING champion Jewel Melody faces a difficult title defence this weekend.

An Australian Pacing Gold purchase, Jewel Melody was simply a class above her rivals during last season’s Qbred Final at Albion Park.

Set to return to the same venue on Saturday night, the Bernie Hewitt-trained filly has drawn the second row in the three-year-old division.

Despite the tough barrier Hewitt is confident Jewel Melody can claim consecutive Group One Finals.

“She’s been doing it tough from wide draws on the front line lately, so maybe the back will make it a little easier,” Hewitt said. “It’s a trailing draw so it gives her the chance to follow through at the start.

“I’m tipping there will be a bit of speed on early, so hopefully that gives her a nice passage through and into a good position early.”

Triumphant in the South East Oaks two starts ago, Jewel Melody was then unplaced in the Queensland Oaks won by Torque Like Motion.

Although drawn to repeat the dose from the pole, Torque Like Motion is the second elect at $3.10 on TAB Fixed Odds, with Jewel Melody a $2.25 favourite.

“Torque Like Motion is the one to beat from the draw,” Hewitt said. “Miki Magic also comes right into it given she has the chance to follow Torque Like Motion through from barrier eight.”
