A STEP up in grade this weekend could lead to a giant leap with talented trotter Sammy Showdown.
Undefeated from four starts this season, Sammy Showdown is engaged in the Vulcan Trotters’ Free-For-All at Tabcorp Park Melton.
The Group Three represents a class rise for the Kylie Sugars-trained squaregaiter.
“This is another step up for him,” Sugars said. “He’s done everything right and has earned his spot in the field.
“It’s been three weeks between runs and he is feeling and doing well.
“He’s got a good draw and it’s over the short distance which he loves.
“All things being equal he will give them something to chase.”
Should the son of Bacardi Lindy perform to expectations Sugars will enter him in The Knight Pistol.
The Group One is scheduled to be conducted at the same venue on February 14.
“I am toying with idea of running him in The Knight Pistol which will be another big step up,” Sugars said. “There is also the Trotters’ Mile in Menangle on Miracle Mile night.
“It will all depend on how he goes this weekend.”
As for his pending assignment, Sammy Showdown will begin from barrier two, which should see Sugars pressing forward in search of the lead.
“It all depends on what happens at the start,” Sugars said. “There will be a bit of a run out of the gate to find a position.
“Variance can begin well from the pole, we have gate speed and Kheiron, which has gained a run now, also begins well.
“Even if he has to sit outside them he will run a top race.”
