Veteran horseman enjoying training renaissance
VETERAN horseman Joe DeMamiel continues to enjoy a renaissance as a trainer.
Bidding his licence ‘au revoir’ more than a decade ago, DeMamiel returned to the fold earlier this season after some not-so-subtle persian from his son, Jared.
“I stopped training after we left Albury many years ago, but always pre-trained a few here on the farm,” DeMamiel said. “Then Jared tells me ‘dad we’re going to start training our own, so you’ll have to do it again.
“So I got my licence to train once more and away we went.”
Preparing a boutique team, DeMamiel has cut a regular path to the winners’ circle, including Bathurst last night thanks to Foresight minor upset victory.
With Matthew Atkinson holding the reins, Foresight enjoyed the perfect one-one trail before scoring from Beancounter and Starlight Sass in 1:58 over 1730 metres.
The son of Soho Tribeca boasts two wins and a third from four starts for DeMamiel.
“He has been a good pick for us,” DeMamiel said. “That win puts him up in grade now, so it will get a bit harder.”
Looking ahead, DeMamiel has three runners ready for action tomorrow – Wat On Earth in Parkes along with Justaquickschooner and Mammals Jewel in Wagga.
“This will probably be Wat’s last run before I give her a break,” DeMamiel said. “She has pretty much raced every week for 10 weeks and will benefit from a break.
“Barrier four gives her a chance to go out on a win, but she will still need things to go her way.
“Schooner has drawn the pole, but there are quite a few very nice ones in it and I’ll be happy if he runs within the first half…a placing would be a bonus.
“We sold Jewel and this will be her first start for her new owners, so it would be terrific to see her win.
“I’ve got no doubt she will lead from the pole as she has terrific gate speed and is worth an each way bet.”
