Win the perfect tonic for veteran horseman

A WELL earned win was the perfect tonic for veteran trainer Max Beasley at Globe Derby yesterday.

Despite battling the flu for the past week, Beasley has soldiered on with handy mare Dee Jays Miss which recorded her first success since last September.

In between victories Dee Jays Miss has registered five placings from six starts.

“I was shoeing a horse and got hot and sweaty but never thought about how I’d be when I cooled down and as such got a chill,” the 73-year-old explained. “Now I’ve got the flu which is knocking me around.

“Yesterday’s win helped put a bit of pep back in my step though.”

With Angela Chapman in the cart, Dee Jays Miss was caught three-wide from barrier six where she remained for the 1800-metre trip.

Despite covering more ground than early settlers, the daughter of Lather Up showed a tremendous amount of intestinal fortitude along the home straight to stave off a late challenge from Lonestar Warrior to score by a head.

Perfect Playgirl was 12 metres away third as the winner rated 1:58.3.

“She’s a nice little mare,” Beasley said. “She’s only been out of the money twice since November 2024, so she’s paying her way.

“Yesterday was a step back in class for her compared to the Oaks and Southern Cross last season, and given her consistent record, I knew she would be in the money.

“That was a huge run from her and she pulled up great, which is very pleasing.”

With no specific plans in mind for the four-year-old, Beasley is considering an interstate trip.

“It’s a little bit hard to place her with her points, so I will play it by ear and look for the right races,” Beasley said. “Further afield I’d like to head to Victoria for her if there is something suitable.”
