Holy Grail beyond reach but bigger wins ahead
HE’S unlikely to reach harness racing’s ‘Holy Grail’ – the Inter Dominion – but Sir Galahad is capable of bigger wins according to trainer Gary Hall.
Continuing to build a solid record with a victory at Gloucester Park last night, the injury-prone pacer is being readied for key targets during Western Australia’s Summer Carnival.
Hall has set his sights on majors such as the Fremantle and WA Pacing Cups with the son of Washington VC.
“He is a very nice horse with a good motor, it’s just his running gear isn’t the best,” Hall said. “He is very badly gaited and gets onto his joints which have gone sore on him which is why he is lightly-raced.
“He’s not Inter Dominion material, but if he stays sound, he could win a race like the Cup.
“The ability is there and he’d go a lot further if he was smoother in his gait.”
Driven by concession reinswoman Maddison Brown, Sir Galahad led throughout from barrier two to score by a head from Sergeant Oaks, with Carter Michael two-and-a-half metres away third.
“He was first-up for nearly four months so his condition gave out close to the line,” Hall said. “He’ll definitely improve for that run and be better next time around.
“I’ll just keep finding the right races for him and work him towards the Cup in the New Year.”
Stretching his record to nine wins and four placings from 16 starts, the seven-year-old rated 1:55.3 over 2130 metres to provide Hall with the middle leg of a treble.
Hall was also triumphant with Eloquent Mach and My Carbon Copy which were driven by his son Gary junior.
