I trained the winner and sired the winner!
HE’S won numerous features and enjoyed a solid rate of success throughout a long career, but a victory in a low assessed event in Maryborough yesterday provided Allan McDonough with one of his proudest moments.
McDonough was triumphant with Blitzern, which rated 1:54.5 over 1690 metres to register his first win from three starts for the season.
Watching Blitzern break his maiden for the term isn’t the catalyst for McDonough’s pride.
It’s the fact the son of Western Terror was driven by the trainer’s son that made the moment “all the more special”.
Blitzern was partnered by promising concession reinsman Bailey McDonough – the first time father and son have combined for a win!
“That’s got to be one of my most satisfying wins,” McDonough said. “It’s like a double success.
“I trained the winner and sired the winner!
“Having Bailey drive him for me made it all the more special.”
The sole runner from the back line, Blitzern broke stride shortly after the start, but quickly regained momentum to be positioned at the tail of the field.
Angled three-wide during the middle stages, Blitzern was sent forward to test the leader, Helansin, from the ‘death seat’.
Proving too strong during the latter stages, the colt scored by a neck from the pacemaker, with Delightful Nikky six-and-a-half metres away third.
“I told Bailey to be somewhat aggressive and drive him like the best horse in the race,” McDonough said. “In that grade I felt he’d be too good for them.
“He’ll have to be driven a little different when he steps up in grade, but he should prove competitive.”
