Undefeated freshman heading for a spell

A SHORT break before a major step up in grade awaits unbeaten freshman District Attorney.

Undefeated from two starts thanks to his eye-catching performance in Bendigo last night, District Attorney has been aimed at the Australasian Breeders’ Crown by owner-trainer Ted Caruana.

With the futurity due to begin with heats in Maryborough on November 7, District Attorney will be sent to a paddock for “as long as possible”.

“He’ll have a break now,” Caruana said. “I’ll have to sit down, have a look at the dates for the Breeders’ Crown and work out how long he can have off.

“He will stay out as long as possible before I have to wind him up again.

“The Breeders’ Crown will be a real test for him, but whatever he does this season is a bonus really as the breed gets going late…none of the others from the mare raced at two!”

Driven by Michael Bellman, District Attorney was settled in the one-one as Tooby Gold led and Maxy Wants To Play occupied the ‘death seat’.

Taken three-wide around the final bend the son of Courage Under Fire sprinted to a three-and-a-half metre win from Ima Charma.

Maxy Wants To Play battled on as the $48.10 rank outsider to be two metres away third.

An Australian Pacing Gold purchase, District Attorney rated 1:58.3 over 1650 metres.

“He did it so easily,” Caruana said. “But I’d expect him to finish off as he did with a run like that.

“Michael never moved on him and has looked after him during both his run.

“I also have to thank Celeste (Towers) our stable manager who does a lot of the caring for him and the team.”
