Jewel sparkles in Final

HAVING broken her Club Menangle maiden last Saturday night, handy mare Jewel Heaven is poised to become a regular visitor at the world class venue during the back half of the season.

In what was her second start around the 1400-metre circuit, Jewel Heaven captured the Waratah Final, with trainer Bernie Hewitt planning further trips with the daughter of Bettors Delight.

In fact, Jewel Heaven is poised to return to Menangle in a fortnight.

“She went super..it was a great win,” Hewitt said. “She’s a nice little mare which I believe can keep on improving.

“As we race at Menangle with some of the others, she will make the trip as well to see how she measures up.

“I haven’t looked far ahead with her, but there is a race at Menangle in two weeks which will suit her, so we’ll take aim at that.”

Driven by Jason Hewitt, Jewel Heaven was settled midfield from barrier eight as Ronzel Sonny led from gate six.

Angled three-wide leaving the back straight, Jewel Heaven sustained a strong sprint to score by a metre-and-a-half from Captain Tom, with Donnie Magic a metre-and-a-half third.

Covering the mile in 1:55.3, the four-year-old took her record to seven wins and seven placings for earnings of $58,800.

“I watched her race from Brisbane, but Jason was quite confident as she won the heat quite well and had worked great since,” Hewitt said. “He felt it came down to what kind of run she got on the night.”
