PROMISING freshman Cecil Peak is favoured to continue his winning streak during the weekend.

Successful during his past two outings, Cecil Peak is engaged in Saturday night’s Sapling Stake at Globe Derby.

Drawn to settle in a prominent position from barrier four, the Scott Gill-trained gelding heads early betting markets at $2.20.

Kept fresh since his victory at the same venue on August 10, Cecil Peak is in prime condition according to Gill.

“I freshened him after his last start with this race in mind,” Gill said. “He goes better fresh, so it was the plan all along.

“This is a step up in grade, but he’s been working well and has drawn to be in the firing line.

“He’s got toe out of the gate, but whether he can cross those inside him, I don’t know.”

Although drawn awkwardly and returning from a spell, Gill rates South Aussie Star as the one to beat.

One of three Ryan Hryhorec-trained runners in the field, South Aussie Star hasn’t raced since capturing the APG Fillies Classic on June 6.

To be driven by Hryhorec, the daughter of Ride High will begin from gate eight.

Hryhorec will also be represented by Main Beach and Kojax, which have drawn two and three.

“South Aussie Star showed her class last time in,” Gill said. “I also watched her trial earlier this week and she looked good.

“She looks like filled out a bit and trialled well, so she’s the one to beat.”
