Preparing for another Cups assault

EARNING the status of ‘Cups King’ during his previous campaign, Dhaulagiri will kick-start his newest quest for glory tomorrow.

The son of American Ideal followed the Cup circuit intensely as of November 2025, with 15 of his last 20 starts in provincial features in South Australia and Victoria.

Successful in the Adelaide Pacing Cup on ANZAC Day 2026, Dhaulagiri also captured the Kapunda, Boort, Port Pirie and St Arnaud Cups, along with the Christmas Cup at Globe Derby.

Dhaulagiri was also runner-up in the SA Italian Cup, while finishing fourth in Horsham, Gunbower, Wedderburn and Mount Gambier’s flagship events.

Sent for a spell following his second in the Ouyen Cup on May 10, the gelding is being primed for next month’s Veterinary Surgeon’s Cup by trainer Matthew Horsnell.

“He had a good run in the country cups last time in and we’re hoping that can be the case again this preparation,” Horsnell said. “He did really well during his time off, which I’m very pleased about.

“The Veterinary Surgeon’s Cup in a few weeks is the first target, then heats of the South Australia Cup.”

As for his pending assignment, Dhaulagiri will begin from barrier five over 1800 metres with Wayne Hill in the cart.

Early markets have the nine-year-old listed as a $1.50 favourite, with Our Indifference considered the main danger at $3.50 from gate three.

One of two Ryan Hryhorec-trained runners in the field, Our Indifference boasts four wins and a third from six starts since arriving in South Australia.

“My bloke has had a fair bit of work in his lead up,” Horsnell said. “I trialled him three weeks ago and he has worked on strongly, so is very forward and ready to go.

“Our Indifference does have race fitness on his side, so he’s the one to beat.”
