She was quick enough

SHE didn’t exactly live up to her name, but she was quick enough!

Making her debut in Cranbourne yesterday, Captain Of Speed proved too slick for her rivals by leading throughout with John Caldow in the cart.

After finding the front from barrier three, Captain Of Speed was never seriously challenged on her way to a three-and-a-half metre win from Olly Odd Potts.

Royal Edard was three metres away third.

Trained by multiple Group One winning horseman Freddy Taiba, the filly covered the mile in 2:01.1.

Pleased with the three-year-old’s performance, Taiba expects Captain Of Speed to improve from her maiden trip to the races.

“She has a lot of raw ability, but that’s just what it is at this point, raw,” Taiba said. “When she matures a little more and gains some experience I expect her to develop into a pretty nice type.

“She’s started her career in the perfect way and I’ve got no doubt she will be better for the run.”

Earmarking the Australasian Breeders’ Crown as the long term plan, Taiba is yet to select an immediate path for the daughter of Captaintreacherous.

“I haven’t decided what is next for her,” Taiba said. “The focus has just been on her first start.

“Ideally I will find a suitable option for her on a program later next week and go from there.

“The Breeders’ Crown is the main aim with her so her schedule will be based around that.”
