Unbeaten youngster a “pain to handle”

COMPLETING a triumphant racing return a fortnight ago, Cohen The Red is expected to continue his winning way when he heads back to Bathurst tomorrow night.

First-up since Boxing Day 2026, Cohen The Red trounced his rivals in 1:54.9 over 1730 metres at the provincial circuit in what was only his second start.

Cohen The Red was also successful during his debut meaning he is unbeaten from two starts.

While noting the gelding’s above-average ability, trainer Mat Rue stated he is still waiting for Cohen The Red’s “brain to catch up”.

“He is a pain of a horse to handle,” Rue said. “I’ve put a lot of work into him and have spent the whole time arguing with him.

“He had a long build up before his first start, then after the win I thought I’d meet him in the middle and put him out for a spell.

“I probably needed time away from him more than he needed a break!

“Hopefully it is just a maturity thing as he has come back a lot more sensible and is gradually getting better. He’s even improved since his last run, but has still got a lot of learning to do.”

To be driven by Rue, Cohen The Red has drawn barrier eight over 1730 metres, but slots into six as a result of two scratchings.

Runner-up behind Cohen The Red, Interestinme is the one to beat again from barrier seven according to Rue.

A member of the in-form Nathan Turnbull stable, Interestinme will begin from gate five.

“I’ll be pushing forward from there and am pretty confident he can find the front,” Rue said. “Interestinme chased us home a couple of weeks ago and he’s the main danger again.”
