Undefeated freshman heading interstate

ANOTHER interstate trip is on the cards for boom freshman Verbici.

Although bred, owned and trained in Victoria, Verbici has done half his racing in New South Wales, with connections planning to head across the Murray again in coming weeks.

The son of Orlando Vici is being set for the Yabby Dams Trotters’ Series by co-trainers Sonia Mahar and Chris Lang, with heats programmed to be staged at Club Menangle on September 29.

Should all go according to plan, Verbici will then contest the $75,000 Final at Club Menangle on October 10.

“He’ll have his next start at Menangle in a couple of weeks,” Mahar said. “All going well, it will then be on to the Final 11 days later.

“The Redwood Classic at the start of November is also on the agenda, but we’ll get through the Yabba Dams series first.”

Racing closer to home last night, Verbici maintained his undefeated status from seven starts by capturing a Vicbred Super Series Final in Melton.

With Lang in the cart, the gelding worked hard in the ‘death seat’ on his way to a eight-and-a-half metre triumph from Regal Gala.

Orlando Veyron was a metre-and-a-half away third as the winner rated 1:59.5 over 2240 metres.

“He went super,” Mahar said. “We’re very happy with his run.

“It can be a bit tricky when you draw the second row with a two-year-old and have lots of traffic to worry about, but it turned out fine.

“You wouldn’t think so given his record, but Chris had trouble getting him trotting early on and he wasn’t overly strong, but he just hasn’t stopped improving.

“He’s comfortable in his gait, has strengthened up, is very relaxed and become so adaptable…he just takes everything in his stride.”
