Will lightning to strike twice on Super Series night?

ODDS of lightning striking twice on one night are even higher than his latest winner, but that’s not stopping Mathew Craven from hoping.

Already enjoying one major surprise at Tabcorp Park Melton tonight Craven is aiming for a second later on the card.

Driving Kimble in a Vicbred Super Series Final, Craven reined the $99 outsider to an upset win.

Running down the home straight as though he was being chased by Lieutenant Gerard, Kimble sprinted to a six-metre victory from over Idyllic, with Major Moth a metre-and-a-half away third.

The two-year-old rated 1:55.2 over 2240 metres to take his record to two wins and six placings from 11 starts for earnings of $85,090.

“When I pulled him away from the pegs turning for home I was just thinking he’d be chasing the two favourites up the straight,” Craven said.

“He just put his ears back and chased hard and finished it off brilliantly.”

As for Craven’s chances of a second Group One upset of the evening, he will drive the aptly-names Itzamajor Surprise in Race 10 – the $130,000 Final for four-year-old mares.

Second in her heat before finishing third in her semi-final, Itzamajor Surprise has drawn barrier four.

TAB Fixed Odds has the daughter of Art Major listed at $34, with Our Princess Tiffany the $1.60 favourite from gate two.

“She has done well so far in the series, but will need a lot of luck tonight,” Craven said.

“She finished second against a similar field in the Breeders’ Crown Championship four starts ago when Our Princess Tiffany finished third, so she has proven she is competitive with the right run.”
