Win puts son on Dad’s Christmas naughty list

IT’S a good thing Christmas lunch is at David Drury’s house this year otherwise he might not get an invite.

David put his festive feast at risk by beating his father, William, for the second time in three days when successful in Mount Gambier tonight.

On Wednesday the Drurys headed across the border to Hamilton, with David preparing Hughie Junior to win with Jason Lee in the card.

William was unplaced with Machbrad.

Fast forward to this evening and William was again represented by Machbrad, which finished fifth as David scored with promising pacer Plutonium.

“Might not have been such a good idea beating Dad this close to Christmas,” David joked. “I doubt I’ll be high on his present list!

“Lunch is at my house this year so I will at least get to eat and funnily enough I won a ham at the track tonight.”

A revelation since arriving from New Zealand, Plutonium toyed with his rivals on his way to a 1:58.3 victory over 2190 metres.

After working to the lead from barrier six, the gelding cruised to a 21-and-a-half metre win from Presidential Art, with Remain Anonamiss a nose away third.

Part-owned by David, Plutonium boasts five wins and two seconds from seven Australian starts.

“He’s a nice horse on the way up,” David said. “I think he can get a fair way down in grade next season.

“I’ve got him entered at Horsham on Wednesday which is why I let him go a bit tonight to give him a descent hit out.

“He’s drawn four and will be pretty hard to beat again.”
