Naughty mare back in good graces

QUALITY mare Sleepee has managed to put herself back in trainer Alison Alford’s good graces.

A week ago Sleepee kicked Alford’s husband Chris, which left the premier reinsman feeling sore and sorry for himself.

As the days progressed, Chris’ leg began to worsen before an infection saw him admitted to hospital on Monday.

After early treatment Chris was transferred to St Vincent’s Hospital where he underwent a second surgery on the infected area last night.

“She was never really in my bad books, but I can’t say the same for Chris,” Alford said. “He might not be too impressed with her for a while.

“Chris’ surgery went well last night and now it’s a matter of making sure the antibiotics do their job so he can be home sometime next week.”

With Josh Duggan in the cart Sleepee worked to the lead from barrier four before completing an effortless 12-and-a-half metre win from C K Spur.

Aldebaran Crescent was five metres away third in 2:00.1 over 2240 metres.

Unbeaten from three starts this season, the daughter of Dejarmbro took her record to 12 wins and eight placings from 23 starts for earnings of $165,130.

“She has come back from a short break in great form,” Alford said. “Her work has been great and she is taking that to the races.

“I’m not sure what is next for her, but after another run or two she may even go for spell.”
