Weekend of ‘firsts’ for concession driver

TALENTED young reinsman Cooper Griffiths enjoyed a weekend of ‘firsts’.

Beginning with last Friday night’s Newcastle meeting, Griffiths registered a double, with the second leg – Tafl Move – the first time he’s driven a winner for his partner, Jemma Coney.

Settled two-back in the running line from barrier four, Tafl Move covered the mile in 1:56 as Bodyline and Letsgetrowdy filled the placings.

“It’s the first win I’ve had for Jemma, so that was cool,” Griffiths said. “It is certainly something I enjoyed as I crossed the line.

“I was also rapt to win with Half Holiday for Darren (Grant) earlier in the night as I felt he was the one to beat and am glad to get the job done.

“I’ve driven a few doubles, but just can’t manage a treble at this stage. Brad Elder actually says if I’ve driven two winners to stop backing me as I’m cursed when it comes to a treble.”

The following evening Griffiths continued his firsts by guiding the Jason Grimson-trained Bluto to victory at Club Menangle.

Thanks to his 1:50.1 performance over a mile, Bluto provided Griffiths with his maiden win at the venue, with the moment doubling as his initial metropolitan triumph.

“It is great to win on a Saturday night,” Griffiths said. “To get a win at Menangle is terrific, but for it to be a metro win as well is something else.

“It was also my first win for Grimmo. He told me the horse will go well and can be in the finish with the right run, which gave me confidence heading out there.

“I can’t thank him enough for giving me the opportunity.”
