IT’S later than expected but Ronald J will make his Australian debut on Saturday night.
Nominated for last weekend’s South Australia Trotters’ Cup, Ronald J was strangely made the first emergency for the Group Two.
Despite being omitted from the field Ronald J was the $1.90 Tab Fixed Odds favourite in pre-post betting.
Disappointed to miss the feature, trainer Andy Gath has found an alternative for the son of Love You.
As such Ronald J will contest the Terang Trotters’ Cup, where he has once again been listed as a short-priced favourite.
Drawn barrier four, and to be driven by Kate Gath, the squaregaiter heads TAB Fixed Odds betting at $1.90, with Magicool considered his biggest threat at $4.80.
Gath also rates Magicool as the main danger despite his 20-metre back mark.
“Ronald J is quite a nice trotter which has trialled extra well,” Gath said. “He is generally safe away from the stand and I expect him to be up front early.
“Based on his work he is going to be very hard to beat.
“Although he is coming off 20, Magicool would have to be the biggest threat. It’s over 2680 metres so Magicool has plenty of time to make up the handicap.”
With several country cups pending Ronald J is expected to follow the provincial circuit in coming months.
