Record-equaling performance

WELL-TRAVELLED pacer Springfield Affair equaled a slice of history last night.

Producing a scintillating performance at Club Menangle, Springfield Affair was simply too slick for his rivals to remain unbeaten from two starts for trainer Seaton Grima.

By covering the 1609-metre trip in 1:49, Springfield Affair joined Artillery as the fastest South Australian-owned pacers.

Artillery, which is poised to compete at Globe Derby tomorrow, stopped the clock in 1:49 in December 2022.

Rapt with the gelding’s effort, owner Kevin Von Duve stated Springfield Affair is capable of breaking the record this campaign.

“What a run,” Von Duve said. “He went huge, and the best part about it, is he could’ve gone quicker.

“Seaton said if another horse came at him he would’ve quickened up as he knocked off a bit up the straight.

“I sent him to Menangle last year and he ran four seconds, but just couldn’t crack a win. I felt he was ready to head back to Menangle, so I called Seaton who was happy to take him on.

“Now he’s won both starts for Seaton and we’re stoked.”

After working to the lead from barrier 10, Springfield Affair was never seriously challenged as he cruised to eight-metre win from Our Sunset Delight, with Nymbal five metres away third.
