Greatest filly ever produced in the Southern Hemisphere

AS WE get older we all have that moment when we say something and think “God, I sound like my father or mother”.

Around the National Trotguide office that fatherly figure is the late Bob Cain, who was always ready to tell us the modern star “wouldn’t be able to live in the same street” or “would be dated” by a “champeen” of the past.

Cain was the defender of all things old, with the halcyon days simply better in every way.

Well, after watching one of the Vicbred Super Series Finals at Tabcorp Park Melton just moments ago it dawned upon me in a decade or so I’ll be saying the current wonder filly “wouldn’t hold a candle to Ladies In Red”.

Not only is the Emma Stewart-trained youngster the best of her crop, she can lay claim to being the greatest filly ever produced in the Southern Hemisphere…yes, Argent included (sorry Bob)!

Thanks to her latest performance, Ladies In Red’s record sits on 17 wins and three seconds from 20 starts for a bankroll of $569,500.

Along with a best time of 1:51.9 over 1729 metres, the three-year-old’s haul includes four Group Ones and a pair of Group Twos.

“She is a one in a generation filly,” Stewart said. “She’s a champion in every sense of the word and she proved that again tonight with the way she won.

“After doing it tough most of the trip she still had too much up the straight…she doesn’t know how to run a bad race.”

With David Moran in the cart, Ladies In Red was three-wide early from her second-row draw before being settled in the ‘death seat’ as her stablemate, Joanna, led from the pole.

Overpowering the pacemaker turning for home, the daughter of Mach Three showed a tremendous amount of intestinal fortitude to complete a metre-and-a-half win from her stablemate, Rogue Wave.

Treachery rounded out a Stewart trifecta when seven-and-a-half metres away third in 1:54.8 over 2240 metres.

“She’s just an amazing filly,” Moran said. “The things she does and how she does it is just something special.

“It’s a huge privilege to drive her as she’s one of a kind, that’s for sure.”
